The quarter represents a square figure represented in the dexter chief (upper left) corner of a shield. Its variant, the canton, is smaller and may have a rectangular shape.
The quatrefoil is not as frequently used as the trefoil or the cinquefoil, but still appears in some arms, as for instance those of Eyre and Dreyer. It is held to be similar to the primrose, and thus hailed as a sign of revival, purity and eagerness.
