The type of animate charge which is usually emblazoned `naiant' is the fish, as the term itself means `swimming'. A creature thus depicted symbolizes swiftness, spirit and sometimes fertility.

The term `naissant' applies to a lion or any other animal rampant, depicted as coming out from an ordinary in the middle of the shield. It symbolizes birth/rebirth and hope.
